As the daughter of Chinese immigrants, my cultural background had a major impact on what I thought was possible for me. I hadn’t realized how deeply my cultural dynamics had affected how I viewed the world until I enrolled in my first Women Studies class. Once I realized how different cultural backgrounds can impact a person’s mental health, I declared my double major in Psychology and Women’s Studies. I then pursued my dual Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling and LGBT Health, Education, & Social Services while hustling to support myself with multiple jobs to become a therapist. After graduation, things didn’t get easier: I juggled a full-time job counseling clients at a substance use clinic and a part-time private practice position. I had no days off, no health insurance, no 401k, and a whopping $100 annual bonus. Even after I became fully licensed in July 2019, I was still barely pulling in $60k/year working both jobs with zero benefits. Two months later, I launched my solo private practice because I wanted to create the financial security I craved instead of waiting around hoping someone would hand it to me. Within two months, I was earning enough to leave my full-time job. Honing in on my secret sauce allowed me to only work with dream clients and charge dream rates. Within two weeks of leaving, I was on track to quadruple my salary working half the amount of hours. Within a year of launching, I expanded into a group practice and hired my first employees during a global pandemic. Within two years of launching, I was on track to surpass $1M in gross revenue. My therapy practice made me realize I am really good at activating my sovereignty and I had a keen ability to help others recognize their secret sauce and step into their highest power. My employees were already talented, but didn’t necessarily recognize what made them stand out; and the more therapists I spoke to, the more I realized: we all secretly wanted to earn more and work less, but as a community, we had little to no support to help us achieve that sustainably. The deeper problem wasn’t that prospective clients were unwilling to pay premium rates. It was that therapists had been so deeply disempowered and heavily oppressed that they couldn’t even imagine having a business that could truly support them. Being treated as a commodity for so long made it hard for them to articulate or even recognize the immense value they provided as a therapist. Worst of all, being overworked and underpaid had impacted their sense of worthiness as a person. Determined to make a bigger impact, I launched a business coaching program to help therapists of color thrive.
